One of the biggest factors in job satisfaction is how valued you feel by your employer. It’s demoralizing to work hard and to not have that effort noticed or rewarded at all. Since being undervalued can lead to stress and burnout, not to mention prevent you from progressing in your career, it’s important for your overall wellbeing to be cognizant of it and move on if needed. Learn more about the signs that you are undervalued at your job:

 

  • You’re Not Paid Market Value

Perhaps the most obvious way employers show how much they value their employees is by the amount of compensation they offer. Do some research to see what the average pay is for your job at similar companies and locations and see if you’re being paid roughly market value. If your pay is significantly less than the average range, it’s an indicator that you are currently undervalued.

 

  • Your Work Isn’t Recognized

Good managers care about communicating to their employees why their contributions matter to the organization. If your boss never seems to acknowledge when you’ve gone above and beyond and done a great job, or a major milestone comes and goes without any recognition, it is likely you are not valued enough. While you shouldn’t always expect accolades for performing the job for which you’re hired, if your boss can’t be bothered to say, “Good job” occasionally, that can impact your self-confidence in your work and hinder your professional growth.

 

  • You Aren’t Given the Tools to Succeed

A manager who truly values their employees will do whatever it takes to remove any hurdles to productivity and job satisfaction. For example, if they find out an outdated software that operates super slowly is making their employees’ work more difficult and frustrating than it needs to be, they’ll have no qualms about fixing the issue. If your employer knows you don’t have the tools to succeed, and doesn’t seem to care about remedying the situation, you are being undervalued.

 

  • You Don’t Receive Opportunities for Growth

Employers that value their workers want to see them succeed and grow professionally, rather than keeping their career path stagnant. Even if an organization doesn’t have open positions for to offer promotions, they can still help their employees develop professionally, such as by offering additional training or giving them the chance to gain new experience to boost their resume. Not receiving any opportunities for growth is a sign that your employer doesn’t value enough to contribute to your long-term career goals.
